About Saint Vincent Medical Professionals & Students Patients & Families My Saint Vincent

Children and teenagers have special needs when it comes to health care. That's why Saint Vincent offers several programs designed to meet the health needs of our community's young people.

Childhood Obesity and Eating Disorders

If your child suffers from obesity or an eating disorder, take heart. At The Saint Vincent Women’s Center, registered dietitians work in partnership with a psychologist to address and treat these emotionally and physically challenging issues.

Mother/Daughter Programs

Saint Vincent offers specially designed classes for mothers and daughters (ages 9 to 12). Focusing on the physical and emotional changes girls experience during adolescence, these programs are designed to enhance communication between girls and their moms. Similar programs for fathers and sons are offered periodically.

The Ophelia Project®

Saint Vincent is proud to be a major sponsor of The Opehlia Project, an organization dedicated to creating a culture that is emotionally, physically and socially safe, and where girls are respected and nurtured. The Ophelia Project promotes positive change in families, schools and communities. By supporting a network of friends, mentors and professionals, the group encourages all children to become confident and healthy. Saint Vincent is involved in The Ophelia Project's annual conference, which draws attendees from throughout the country.

Immunizations

Staying Healthy Through Routine Childhood Physicals and Immunizations

One of the most important things you can do for your child's health is to visit your family doctor regularly and to have him/her immunized against contagious illnesses. The staff of the Saint Vincent Family Medicine Center recommends children be examined by a primary care physician at the following ages:

2 weeks
2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15 months
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18 years

Some of these physical exams may include immunizations for your child. The protective benefits of vaccinations far outweigh any potential risks associated with them. Immunizations are the proverbial "ounce of prevention."

The C.H.E.C.K. Project

Saint Vincent is proud to participate in The C.H.E.C.K. Project (Comprehensive Health for Erie County Kids). This project provides the following for the children of Erie County:

  • Education and awareness to parents, employers and the medical community
  • A medical home, meaning a physician for all babies, continuity of care and regular check ups
  • Immunizations provided by local agencies
  • Immunization registration, including newborn registration, an immunization database, and a reminder system
  • Outreach programs that target community needs, stress neighbors helping neighbors and provide health education
