Screening for Bone Density and Osteoporosis
As women age, bone mass declines faster than new bone can form. For many women, the result is osteoporosis, a potentially crippling disease that makes bones weak and susceptible to fractures. While osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person’s disease, it can strike at any age. Often a woman will not realize she has osteoporosis until a minor fall, sudden strain or even a firm hand shake causes a bone to break.

"It is estimated that one in two women will have an osteoporosis-related bone fracture. That’s why, if you are over the age of 50 or have a family history of osteoporosis, it’s vital to get a bone densitometry test at The Saint Vincent Outpatient Center at Union City."

Bone Density Screening at the Saint Vincent Women’s Center
Bone density can be measured with a safe, simple, painless scan of the hips and spine called bone densitometry, or a DEXA scan. The scan helps your physician detect osteoporosis earlier than a routine X-ray, so that treatment can begin before a fracture occurs. Bone densitometry can:

• Assess your chance of fracture in the future
• Determine your rate of bone loss
• Help your physician monitor the effects of osteoporosis treatment
