PGY-1 PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
- Two pharmacy resident positions annually
- Start date: July 1st
- ASHP accredited
PROGRAM PURPOSE
The Pharmacy Practice Residency Program at Saint Vincent Health Center in Erie, Pennsylvania is designed to develop skills in patient care, drug information, pharmacy systems and leadership. The residency provides an opportunity to develop skills while working in a collaborative environment involving pharmacy, nursing and the medical staff. The pharmacy resident will provide pharmaceutical services in the areas of therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, disease state management, and pharmacy consultative services. The resident will provide educational programs to pharmacy, nursing, medical staff and the community. The resident will also have involvement in quality improvement activities, pharmacy distribution, automated medication delivery systems, use of electronic software, database management and administrative and regulatory activities (e.g., JCAHO survey preparation). The resident will also be required to complete a project during the one-year residency.

Elective Rotations (two rotations):
- Teaching/Academia

- Cardiovascular Critical Care
- Ambulatory Care
- Geriatric Medicine/Long-term Care
- Drug Use/Outcomes Research
Resident may also complete an additional rotation in a Required area
SAINT VINCENT DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY SERVICES
The Saint Vincent Department of Pharmacy currently employs 42 full-time equivalents with 24 Pharmacists and 18 supportive personnel. This staff includes the director of pharmacy, 16 staff pharmacists, three managers, and five full time clinical pharmacists. The Pharmacy Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A brief description of the Pharmacy Department follows:
Distributive Services - Inpatient:
- Fully decentralized unit-based drug distribution system house wide (Pyxis MedStation® 2000 Rx)
- Computerized pharmacy operation and patient information system (Eclipsys®)
- Decentralized pharmacy service units in critical care areas (ICU/CCU)
- 24 hour/day, 7 day/week, 365 days/year service
- IV admixture program for large and small volume parenterals and chemotherapy
Clinical Services and Drug Information:
- Five full-time inpatient clinical pharmacy specialists
- Drug information services for healthcare professionals
- Clinical pharmacy services includes rounding in several areas with nurses and physicians, drug consult and education programs
- Computerized drug information data base (Micromedex®, Lexi-Comp)
- Automated pharmacist intervention documentation program (Clinitrend®)
- Drug use evaluation and quality improvement programs
- Pharmacokinetic monitoring service
- Anticoagulation and Anti-thrombotic monitoring service
- Pain management/Palliative Care service
- Nutritional support program (TPN)
- Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Program
- Target drug intervention programs (eg, IV to PO switch, renal dosing)
- Active Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and formulary process
Academic Affiliations:
The Pharmacy Department has affiliations with several colleges of pharmacy including Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh and Ohio Northern University. Both general hospital pharmacy and clinical pharmacy clerkship rotations are offered for undergraduate students from these schools.

The application deadline is Friday, January 11, 2008.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
- Licensed or license eligibility by the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy during the upcoming residency year.
- Participate in an on site interview at Saint Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pennsylvania.
