The Family Medicine Center

The Family Medicine Center, on the campus of Saint Vincent Health Center, provides an opportunity for residents to gain a full understanding of a private office practice. There are 22 examination rooms, a well-equipped laboratory with a full-time technologist, an electronic medical record system, a large conference room, and a library. On average, residents and faculty see 100 patients each day at the center. First–year residents see four to six patients per half day; second–year residents, seven to 10; and third–year residents, 10 to 12. The cases encountered reflect all aspects of medicine, from routine well–child care to examinations and treatment of the elderly. Faculty member preceptors assure a good blend of practice and conceptual teaching.

To ensure continuity of care, Family Medicine Center patients requiring admission to Saint Vincent are followed by their own resident physician, under the supervision of a full–time faculty member. Coverage is provided to allow optimal dedication to the primary rotation.

For over 25 years the residency program has trained residents at a rural office, Elk Valley Medical Center. Three to 6 residents each year use this state of the art office as their continuity site. Three full time faculty serve as preceptors along with the faculty from the Erie office. Elk Valley boasts a full time lab as well as on site x-ray equipment, a procedure room, conference area, resident library, and physical therapy facilities. There are 23 exam rooms each with computer screens for easy access to the electronic medical record. As at the main office residents provide every aspect of medical care. They see slightly higher volumes of patients at this office with increased opportunities for prenatal patients and procedures.
