Treatment of Heart Rhythm Problems
The diagnosis and effective treatment of heart arrhythmias, or abnormal rhythms in the heart’s electrical system, are available at the Saint Vincent Heart Center. Electrophysiologists work in dedicated electrophysiology labs that allow them to diagnose and characterize cardiac arrhythmias in a controlled setting. Results of electrophysiology testing help guide the treatment of arrhythmias with medications, surgery or catheter ablation.
Whenever possible, Saint Vincent Heart Center cardiologists use nonsurgical procedures to correct heart rhythm problems. Non-surgical treatment means no blood loss, no unsightly scarring and decreased recovery time. That’s why Saint Vincent Heart Center cardiologists introduced the region to radiofrequency catheter ablation to correct abnormal electrical signals or “short circuits” in the heart. Radiofrequency catheter ablation involves the insertion and threading of a catheter with multiple electrodes attached through a vein and into the heart. “Short circuits” are eliminated, enabling the heart to beat normally without surgery.
