Artificial Heart Pump Implantation

The Thoratec® ventricular assist device (VAD) is an FDA-approved
bridge to heart transplant. When the heart muscle is damaged to the point of no longer having the ability to effectively pump blood, Saint Vincent cardiac surgeons implant this special, portable VAD into transplant candidates to do the work for the heart muscle until a suitable donor heart is found. Though heart transplants are not performed in the Erie area, Saint Vincent Heart Center cardiac surgeons introduced this important bridge technology to the region to extend precious lives.
