Stereotactic Radiosurgery

The Saint Vincent Cancer Care Center is working together with The Regional Cancer Center to provide brain cancer patients with the latest technology available, the Trilogy Stereotactic System. The Trilogy provides high dose radiation to a desired target with precision within one millimeter of the target area. The trilogy can be used to treat cancerous tumors, benign tumors and abnormal blood vessels in the brain. In addition the Trilogy can also treat tumors in the spine, liver, prostate and pancreas.

This technology provides a new option for patients where chemotherapy or surgery are not as effective and in cases where the cancer is deep inside the brain. This technology is less invasive than other techniques and applies radiation only to the targeted area and not to any of the optic nerves.

The Trilogy is the leading image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) system. The advanced imaging capabilities built into the system allow patients to be positioned for treatment with submillimeter accuracy and a respiratory gating system compensates for any tumor movement that occurs as a patient breathes. The Trilogy system is powerful, and it can deliver radiotherapy doses at least 60 percent faster than conventional methods. This shortens the length of time patients need to spend undergoing treatment and provides a more comfortable atmosphere during treatment.
