Saint Vincent Health Center, in cooperation with the Lake Erie Consortium for Osteopathic Medical Training, offers an AOA–approved osteopathic emergency medicine residency, which opened July 1, 2004.
Saint Vincent has had a longstanding history of commitment to medical education. We are affiliated with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine and Penn State University/Milton S. Hershey School of Medicine.
In addition to the emergency medicine residency, Saint Vincent offers a well–established Traditional Osteopathic Internship, a Special Emphasis in Emergency Medicine Internship and ACGME–approved programs in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Colorectal Surgery. We offer fourth–year core student rotations in emergency medicine to LECOM students and elective rotations when available.
The Health Center
Saint Vincent Health Center was founded in 1875 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Since then, it has become a large tertiary care regional referral center and a leading provider of quality health care for the community. There are 413 beds in the Health Center, which is staffed by more than 300 physicians providing care in 35 medical and surgical specialties. The emergency department cares for more than 65,000 patients per year and is responsible for more than 50% of the 17,000 admissions annually. Saint Vincent also welcomes more than 1,600 babies into the world each year.
Saint Vincent and Northwest Pennsylvania
Four colleges and universities are located here, plus the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. The community offers something for everyone, from several fine community theaters and a philharmonic orchestra to opportunities for hunting, skiing and watching our semi-pro baseball and hockey teams in action.
Presque Isle State Park, located on the peninsula that surrounds the bay and protects the city, is an outdoors enthusiast’s paradise. It has seven miles of sandy beaches, hiking trails, water sports of all kinds
and is home to an ecological preserve that is the center of a thriving tourist industry with more than 4 million visitors annually. It was also featured on “Nature,” the internationally acclaimed PBS television program. National Geographic said we have the second most beautiful sunsets in the world over Lake Erie…the locals will convince you they
are the best!
Erie is home to corner restaurants, stores and churches, ethnic neighborhoods, safe streets, summer festivals, outdoor concerts by the bay, crisp winters and friendly people…a great place to raise a family with high-quality lifestyle and low cost of living! Program Description
Saint Vincent Osteopathic Emergency Medicine Residency Program provides the resident with the necessary experience, knowledge, guidance and skills to become a complete emergency physician in the osteopathic tradition. The emergency department at Saint Vincent has 22 beds, with a separate 12 –bed fast–track unit, all with mobile monitoring capability, in–room radiography, and the department’s own ultrasound machine. Saint Vincent serves as the region’s SANE program (Sexual Assault Nurse Extender), with a private crisis treatment room and trained forensic nurses on call 24 hours per day. We are also the region’s main psychiatric center and DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) participant for the Department of Homeland Security, to be deployed nationally in times of disaster. We are designated as the state administrative headquarters for BTLS (Basic Trauma Life Support) and are a medical command facility. The emergency department is covered by 15 full–time residency–trained attending physicians who are AOBEM– or ABEM–certified or eligible. In addition, the fast-track area is covered by three physicians who are board–certified in family medicine. Our rotations include Trauma rotations at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pediatric rotations at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Toxicology with the inpatient program at Pinnacle Hospital.
